Online English pronunciation exercise/test

Speaking and pronunciation of English words is the most difficult part for people learning English as a second language to do well. Unlike other languages, in English you don't always say a word like it is written/spelt. Not only do the sound/pronunciation of letters often change between words, but and in many words some of the letters are not pronounced (are silent).

Although it is very difficult to pronounce English words correctly, it doesn't have to be. You just need to use the right technique/method and practise. To see the method I use with my students, read the article 'How to pronounce English words perfectly'. This will help you improve your pronunciation.

To both help you to pronounce English words correctly, I have created the below online pronunciation exercise. This test/exercise will both help you to say some of the most commonly mispronounced words in English and show you that you can pronounce English words correctly.

This exercise is for British English pronunciation.

Common English pronunciation mistakes exercise:

In this online pronunciation exercise there are 15 different words that you need to identify. You start by first listening to the word by playing the question's audio player. Then say the word you hear. After this, spell the word in the text box and press the 'Check' button.

After you have spelt the word correctly, you should practise saying it. To do this, go to the web page of Google Translate or go to the Google Translate App on your mobile phone and practice saying the word by pressing on the microphone icon. Do it until the word you want to say is written on the screen in text.

Now go to Google Translate on your mobile phone and practise saying it until the word it writes in text is the same as this word. Don't look at the word when you say it!!!

Now that you have done this exercise, you will have noticed that saying words in English doesn't have to be that difficult. Most people who do this exercise have more problems with spelling the word correctly than in saying it.
